One Handed Swords

" Big shout out to this site, lots of screenshots like below come from here "

Example diagram

風神の剣 = Fujin Sword or Sword of the Wind God

一振で嵐を呼ぶ、風刃に祝福された剣 = A sword blessed by the Wind God, it can summon a storm with a single swing.

Little commentary by me, suprsingly, Fujin has not made an appearance in Megaten yet, although this idea has. In a good amount of mainline SMT games this sword has appeared, although with slightly different spelling "風神剣" so this could be a reference to that.

" so much thanking "

No versus stuff here but this is a neat reference to the "King of Kings" game made by Atlus, one of their early titles.

Staffs

Example diagram
" Thank you Japanese youtuber "

万象の杖 = Staff of All Creation

Example diagram

自然の理を司るという呪文の刻まれた杖 = A staff engraved with spells said to govern the laws of nature.

This is a funny one. Universal stick? Probably not but isnt that something.

Example diagram

This could be a reference to SMT or just convergent evolution コキュートス means Cocytus as in the ninth circle of hell, wherein the Devil lies frozen in ice in Dante's Inferno. This appears as a spell in some Megaten games but interestingly to me, Digital Devil Saga, which Hashino worked on and clearly used some ideas there for Metaphor. Thought it was interesting to bring up. The description says something about controlling the whole layer of Hell but we don't know how big that is so it does not feel very versus applicable. This idea has been referenced in other places like being the name for one of the dungeons in the Abyss of Time in P3 or as one of the big balls Lucifer summons in SMT V so to me, this seems like convergent ideas.

世界樹の黄金杖 = Golden Staff of the World Tree

This one is interesting, this is likely a reference to Etrian Odyssey, the name mentions 世界樹 or the World Tree. It is a generalized form of many myths of great trees that connect the world found in many cultures. But this concept is used as a key term in Etrain Odyssey, the Japanese title even has it in there: 世界樹 の迷宮. This acts as the only real concrete connection lore wise, and funnily enough, this precendent was created in Persona, so it would be consistent to Megaten if that were the case.

Here Elizabeth is possessed by Zeus and he makes clear references that the world he comes from is the Etrian Odyssey world, such as mentioning the Yggdrasil which is important the titular World Tree, and the cheeky inclusion of odyssey. But we don't need to speculate as in "Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth Official Visual Materials," this is said.

Example diagram
" Persona Q Shadow of the Labyrinth Official Setting Documents Collection "

"This one, referred to by Director Kaneda as the "winged" version, is modeled after Zeus as a celestial god embodying lust and arrogance. In this title, Zeus was designed under the setting that he is one of twelve exceptional, elite Andros created during the great war against the Deep Ones (Fukabito). Those with a keen eye will likely recognize that he is based on the archetype of a certain NPC from Etrian Odyssey III.(Hyūga)"

The Andros or Yggdroids in English are a type of robot in Etrian Odyssey III: The Drowned City. As it is stated here, this Zeus is meant to be from Etrain Odyssey.

So either way, either through Persona or by itself, there is a connection.

Large Swords

Syria is real in Metaphor confirmed.

Cursed Blade Nihil is the name and this is actually a continued tradition of referencing Osamu Tezuka's manga Dororo. The SMT card even mentions this is a refrence the late great Osamu Tezuka, isnt that neat. The spelling is a unique Megaten thing from what I could find. Although, weirdly it's used a lot in Etrain Odyssey.

Totsuka no Tsurugi

Ame no Habakiri

All of these sword are referencing swords from Shinto tales, while nothing too specific to Megaten titles of the past like unqiue spelling or something (there could be visual similarity but it's so hard to find footage that I can only guess), all of these have made appearances in Megaten titles so I think it adds more, consistency, so to say. That it got that philosophy, it knows how to ball with da' Megaten.

The first one is referencing the Kusanagi no Tsurugi (天叢雲剣), you may notice the spelling is different but it's negligable in this case as the part that is different is the sword (太刀 instead of 剣) part of the kanji to specify it is in the large sword class. Which will be funny later because the next two do not do that so get fucked Yamato Takeru, the guy associated with using it. Fun fact about that guy though, he has appeared as Naoto's 2nd tier persona and as a demon in SMT IV, I don't want to link to those because it'd take 1% more work so you are just gonna have to look it up or trust me with your life. Also fun fact, all of these swords are related to Susanoo, in this case he found the sword.

Example diagram
Example diagram

Next up is the Totsuka no Tsurugi, similar story as before, sans spelling, it da' same. Although, one interesting factoid is that this sword is the ultimate sword in P4 due to the story where Izanagi uses one to slice up Hinokagutsuchi after he kills his wife, Izanami, in childbirth. It appears in other Megaten titles, should be noted. Such as SMT V, as it appears as the sword the Nahobino summons out of his hand, isn't that swell. In the case for V, it is referencing the fact that Susanoo uses one of These swords to kill Orochi.

Lastly is the Ame no Habakiri (天羽々斬), which is the proper name for the blade used to slay Orochi and just like the other two appears as a weapon in the series. Side note, getting any footage of the name for this weapon in Persona 5 Strikers was a nightmare. It is spelt in Katakana for some reason but it means the same thing.

アメ= Ame ノ= no ハバキリ = Habakiri

なるかみの槍 = Narukami Spear

雷神に祝福された雷の力を宿す槍 = A spear imbued with the power of lightning, blessed by Raijin.

Nothing versus relevant here really, just thought it was cute they mentioned Raijin and Fujin. Also you might think the Narukami part of the name is a call back to P4, you may think that.

Folding Fans

Example diagram

炎女神の神扇 = Divine Fan of the Flame Goddess

炎と舞踏の女神に祝福された聖なる扇 = A sacred fan blessed by the goddess of flame and dance.

This could be a reference to Konohana Sakuya, Yukiko's initial persona, as she is also a goddess of flame and dance.

Khakkharas

Example diagram
From Metaphor: ReFantazio Official Perfect Guide page 373

These 4 are references to the Four Symbols those dang old beasts. In order from top to bottom:

朱雀の錫杖 = Vermilion Bird’s Khakkhara

Example diagram
Example diagram

玄武の錫杖 = Black Tortoise’s Khakkhara

Example diagram
Example diagram

白虎の錫杖 = White Tiger’s Khakkhara

Example diagram
Example diagram

青龍の錫杖 = Azure Dragon’s Khakkhara

Example diagram
Example diagram
Example diagram

The description for all 4 of them includes a mention that these do come from beasts furthering the intent, they all follow this pattern:

雷を司る神獣の力を宿した錫杖 = A Khakkhara imbued with the power of a divine beast that governs thunder (imagine instead of thunder, it like wind or ice depending on the guy, you can trust me).

Now considering the fact that this is in the summoner's weapon lineage, I do think it's interesting specific entites that do appear frequently in Megaten games were chosen here. At most, so far, it has only been a mention of a legend not really shown in Megaten or just the weapon appearing as itself appearing but this is a bit more elaborate. I think this adds more consistency to demon scaling if these weapons are said to be "imbued" with their power, although in this case for some reason consistency doesnt seem to be a convincing argument for scaling and not making it an outlier. Even though an outlier by definition is definied as a piece of data that is far removed from the data set so having a bunch of data say the same thing would actually make it not an outlier. Instead of single or couple data points it's like removing a whole data set just cause, but I'm no data scientist so who knows

Axes

アイシクルアックス = Icicle Axe

氷の力を宿した絶対零度の斧 = An absolute zero axe imbued with the power of ice

盤古の神斧 = Pangu’s Divine Axe

全てを破壊しその上に創造する者の斧 = The axe of one who destroys everything and creates anew upon it

Example diagram

The Axe's are quite the statement machine, so this one is the most interesting and so far the best evidence of universal Metaphor (besides that one thing), and I should mention that this weapon is referencing the creation myth in Chinese mythology so the idea it is the universe seems to be legit based on what I could find and understand. Pangu in myth used his axe to split the comsic egg (which is either the universe or a big egg that has the universe inside of it), doing so he created the Heavens and the Earth from the two sides and maintained the seperation. After doing this, Pangu would maintain the seperation of the heaven and earth until it remained fix and then his body became some stuff. Some legends say the Four Symbols helped him do all that, hmmm, quite the interesting detail.

Cross Bows

This one is awsome.

Example diagram

アポロン拾壱号 = Apollo 11

宇宙の果てを目指す挑戦者の絡繰弓。複数回攻撃するスキルが常に最大ヒット数になる = A mechanical bow of a challenger who aims for the farthest reaches of the universe. Skills that strike multiple times will always hit the maximum number of times.

So not only does this confirm America being real but also that Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin had a fucking crossbow with them on the moon. Which like, why did they need that, are there aliens in Metaphor or more aptly were there aliens since Neil Armstrong sniped them out of existence. The implications of this item are immense and wonderful.

Mace

Example diagram

玻璃の棍 = Glass Staff

嘘偽りを暴く力を秘めた水晶棍 = A crystal staff that conceals within it the power to lay bare all lies and deception.

Example diagram

浄玻璃の輝棍 = Radiant Staff of Purifying Glass

一切の嘘偽りを暴く光を放つ聖棍。= A holy staff that emits a light which exposes all lies and falsehoods without exception.

銀河烈星拳 = Galactic Rending Star Fist

月の女神自ら用いた星砕く程の烈拳。複数回攻撃するスキルが常に最大ヒット数になる = A ferocious, star shattering fist once wielded by the moon goddess herself. Skills that strike multiple times will always hit the maximum number of times.

This item is referencing the signature attack of the demon Artemis in SMT V (has the exact same name too in Nippon) that she performs with the weird crossbow/glove thing on her arm, which, I've seen people be more accepting of this item for scaling, which is funny cause it should get much higher considering the origins. But I'm sure it's an outlier, I've been seeing a lot of outliers though, makes one ponder. This is also a Saint Seiya reference.

Example diagram
Example diagram
Example diagram

世紀末覇者の鉄拳 = End of the Century Conqueror Iron Fist

ある女傑が使っていたとされる鉄拳 = An iron fist said to have been wielded by a certain heroic woman.

This is a reference to Makoto (the girl one), some explaining as this is a joke in the Japanese version of the game/fanbase.

Example diagram

In this scene instead of saying this, Ryuji says (世紀末覇者先輩) End of the Century Conqueror-Senpai, which as some might know both are reference to Fist of the North Star. I guess the localizers thought people might miss the joke since you'd have to be more familiar to catch it.

Example diagram
Example diagram

天地開闢の拳 = Creation of Heaven and Earth Fist

天裂き地割る、頂きに至りし王の拳 = The king’s fist that rends the heavens and splits the earth, reaching the very summit.

It happened again, do a little flashback to the axe one and then come back here because this is referencing that same myth but this time the Japanese version.

Example diagram

Now from what I've read of the Koujiki this cosmic event is more, seperating the existing matter in the universe to divide and create the Heaven's and Earth, It's like the axe thing but an event that happened I guess, from what I gather it is interpreted as the start of the universe. Still pretty cool, makes it consistent, which is epic.

ジョーカーナイフ = Joker's Knife

権威や秩序を嘲笑う反逆者の短剣。ラッキースラッシュ、道化のイタズラで良い効果が出やすくなる = A rebel’s dagger that mocks authority and order. Lucky Slash and Fool’s Prank are more likely to produce beneficial effects.

END

Did you all like that, was that good, I had some fun and then not fun because you have no idea how many of these are just "this is made from silver, you could stab a guy to death with it ok" descriptions there are, but before we end, a little Q.A

CAN THESE DESCRIPTIONS BE TRUSTED

Yeah, I think so, the vast majority are just literal descriptions of what they are made of or where they are from or who gave them to you. A lot of them describe the actual in gameplay effects too. I'd say there was like 2 descriptions that seem exaggerated a bit but all the text is written like third person omniscient, I think it's legit.

DOES THIS MEAN THE P5 CAST IS DEAD IN METAPHOR

It would be funny but it's probably more the idea of the collective unconcious making these things or some crap like that like with Joker in the Episode Aigis dlc fight.

WHY ARE YOU SO HANDSOME, AND COOL, AND SMART, AND FUNNY, AND 7 FOOT TALL

I was just born this way but thank you for noticing.

as the finale thing here are the top 3 mvps that gave the best weapons

3. Basilio: those axes went crazy absolute zero, earth busting, and a universal argument. Went hard like Fidelio's body when it hit the floor

2. Catherina: Paripus get it done star level arguments with some SMT bullshit mixed in is good, and her also universal shit.

1. Eupha: the best character and easily the glue holding big boy Metaphor scaling cause of that sweet sweet Megaten scaling.
